Hello all, here is a timely review of COVID-19 treatments currently being investigated. Everything is still under investigation, but we have reason to be hopeful!
- Hydroxychloroquine (study underway in South Korea)
- Traditionally used for malaria prophylaxis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, porphyria
- Shows in-vitro action against coronaviruses (including SARS-CoV-2)

- Heart problems as possible side effect (arrhythmias, etc.)
- Lopinavir/ritonavir (studied in China)
- Did not show evidence of treatment of pneumonia in a study in China (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001282)
- Further study underway in South Korea
- Remdesivir (study underway in USA, including Stanford)
- Intravenous broad spectrum antiviral with in-vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 (used on compassionate basis)
- Also currently in clinical trial for Ebola infections
- Methylprednisolone (ongoing study in China)
- Decreased risk of death in patients exhibiting severe lung complications (ARDS)*
- Monoclonal antibodies
- May mitigate effects of cytokine storm observed in some patients
- Tocilizumab (study underway in Italy), Sarilumab (study underway in New York)
